About Sclerotherapy

Spider veins don’t just impair the beauty of our legs, they can cause leg pain and fatigue. Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that safely and effectively treats spider veins, diminishing their appearance and addressing painful side effects to make your legs look – and feel – great.

The Science

Sclerotherapy injects a safe sclerosing solution directly into each vein, causing the walls of the injected vein to seal shut, so blood is redirected to unaffected veins. Over time, your body absorbs the damaged vein, making it less visible and uncomfortable. The absorption time varies from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the size of the spider vein.

The Results

Sclerotherapy has no downtime, and you can immediately return to your regular routine. Exercise and fitness is encouraged as it will help expedite recovery. Your medical provider may require you to wear compression socks or hose for a couple of days after to optimize the results. Full effects can be expected to occur within three to six weeks. Larger veins can take several months, and some patients need more than one treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sclerotherapy can be used almost anywhere on the body, with the exception of larger veins such as varicose veins which will not respond well to this treatment.

Anyone who is bothered by the appearance of spider veins could be a potential candidate. A consultation with our Medical Providers can help you determine if this treatment could deliver the results you seek. Some contraindications to keep in mind include: if you are pregnant or have a history of a blot clotting disorder sclerotherapy is not a good choice. Additionally, if you have cardiovascular disease or have had a heart bypass surgery, then sclerotherapy is not recommended.

This is typically a quick process and can take as little as 30 minutes. The time and number of injections will depend on the size and number of veins being treated. A small needle will be used for the injections and a small compression bandage may be applied during the treatment.

Most patients do not describe the treatment as painful and a topical numbing agent is not necessary. Some patients experience minor stinging or cramps when the needle is inserted into the vein.
