The Science

As you age, you lose the healthy hormonal balance that you had in your youth, unleashing a cascade of problems and putting you at risk of age-related illnesses and disease.

A critical step in understanding your hormone health is getting tested and working with a doctor who specializes in anti-aging and knows what to test and how to interpret those results.

Generations ahead of bovine or equine synthetic hormones used in the past, BHRT is a safe, natural and highly effective state-of-the-art treatment that uses hormones that are bio-identical to genuine human hormone to more naturally restore hormonal health and return you to a youthfulness and vigor more reminiscent of your 20s and 30s.

Is BHRT right for you?

Men and women alike experience serious conditions and symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms associated with aging, BHRT may be right for you.

BHRT for Women

Endless generations of women have suffered from the draining impact of hormonal imbalances, only to be told to “just deal with it.” In part, this may be because medical science hasn’t had an easy answer to the difficult problem of rebalancing a woman’s more complex hormonal profile—until now.

Wellness Jar’s medical experts specialize in understanding and solving for a woman’s more complex hormonal needs, leveraging the power of BHRT to help you rediscover “you,” while combating age-related diseases and symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, hot flashes or night sweats, insomnia, low libido or painful intercourse, headaches, mood swings, hair loss, and brain fog.

BHRT for Men

Men suffer from their own version of menopause. Andropause and low testosterone put men at risk of serious disease while inflicting a torrent of age-related symptoms.

Men seek natural, safe and effective therapies that can help rebalance hormone levels, return to youthful health and vigor and combat age-related symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, low sex drive, male hot flashes, muscle loss, urinary problems, depression, fatigue, and hair loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll meet our Medical Director, Dr. Bonnie Gasquet, and discuss your symptoms, goals and medical history. We will conduct comprehensive tests and lab work to get a 360-degree view of hormonal levels and their impact on key bodily functions and how you’re feeling. You’ll be provided with an individualized BHRT protocol. Our Medical Director will monitor your progress, most typically 3 to 4 weeks after therapy begins and every 3 to 6 months thereafter. You will begin to notice changes quickly—most typically a few weeks to 3 months after treatments begin. Tests and lab work will be repeated every 6 months to fine-tune BHRT to your body’s changing needs.

Hormones are chemicals responsible for metabolic regulation, immune system health, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, temperature regulation and regrowth and repair of damaged tissue. The body has approximately 60 trillion cells, all of which must communicate properly in order to carry out their intended functions. Hormones are delicately balanced, and when working at the appropriate levels, and when that balance is correct, the body performs at its peak capacity. If the balance is lost, it can cause health disorders, including mental, emotional and physical symptoms in addition to specific diseases.

As a woman, your hormone levels start to make drastic changes as you age, which in turn can result in weight gain, low libido, sleep deprivation, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, and other challenges. Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, is widely used for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and is considered by many to be the most effective. The best way to determine if this could be an option for you is to have a blood test and consult with a physician who specializes in anti-aging who understands the complexity of women’s hormones.

BHRT is a new and exciting generation of hormone therapy. Traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and BHRT are different in how they’re created and how they’re used. Traditional HRT often uses synthetic hormones found nowhere in nature and uses pre-mixed “take-it-or-leave-it” blends that don’t take individual needs into account. In contrast, BHRT uses plant-based hormones derived from soy or yams which are molecularly the same as natural human hormones, i.e. they are “bio-identical.” Supplements are completely customized to the individual following comprehensive hormonal testing and created to treat your personal goals. With BHRT, men and women alike can find relief from the symptoms and conditions related to hormonal imbalance such as menopause, andropause, thyroid disorders, and adrenal fatigue, allowing one to rediscover youth from the inside out. Also of importance, BHRT can protect your body in the long term from heart disease and osteoporosis.

Your medications may be given orally (tablets), transdermally (through the skin), sublingually (as drops, Troches or lozenges under the tongue) or vaginally. Another method is injecting “pellets” under the skin. We do not offer this option for women as Dr. Gasquet believes this limits the ability to assess and titrate medication dosage over time, which can be necessary with many women. Dr. Gasquet will weigh several factors unique to you in order to individualize treatment plans.

Most people begin to feel the effects of bioidentical hormones within two to three months of starting their program. Some feel the changes more quickly. It can be useful to keep a journal that covers both the symptoms you know are associated with hormone levels such as sleep schedule, menstrual cycle, mood, skin changes, and appetite, but also general information about your energy levels and feeling of wellness. Additionally, listen to feedback from others who may notice improvements you do not.

Yes, bioidentical hormone therapy has a few potential side effects that are classically linked to dosage. As hormone levels improve, dosages will be adjusted accordingly. If side effects are noted, contact your physician. Side effects may include acne, or irritability, breast tenderness, spotting, cramping and bloating. These effects generally diminish as hormone levels return to normal. Due to each woman metabolizing her own hormones and replacement hormones at different rates, bloodwork is monitored throughout your treatment plan to determine specific adjustments.

The term “male menopause” is sometimes used to describe decreasing testosterone levels related to aging. So, what’s the best way to refer to so-called male menopause? Many doctors use the term “andropause” to describe aging-related hormone changes in men. Other terms include testosterone deficiency syndrome, androgen deficiency of the aging male and late-onset male hypogonadism.

If you are experiencing symptoms of testosterone deficiency, a simple lab test will determine your testosterone level. Some examples of the effects of low testosterone include but are not limited to the following reduced muscle mass, lower sexual drive, memory loss, depression or mood changes. Contact us today to discuss your symptoms and schedule a blood test.

There are many causes of low testosterone, but they can generally be divided into two categories: primary and secondary causes. Primary deficiency is affiliated with a problem with the testes (e.g. chromosomal abnormality, undescended testis, and more), and secondary causes stem from an issue outside the testes that is interfering with normal hormone production (e.g. medications, hypothalamic or pituitary disease, concurrent illnesses, and more).

Yes. Benefits reported in numerous studies include more muscle mass and strength as well as less fat, weight loss, higher bone density, better metabolic and diabetic control, improved mental health, including better cognitive function, mood, and concentration, heightened sexual function, such as libido, erectile function and orgasms, as well as potentially fewer cardiovascular events.

Bioidentical hormones are hormones formulated to be the same structure as the naturally occurring hormones in your body. The most effective FDA approved, and safest medications are ordered from a compounded pharmacy. Your physician has the hormones tailored to fit your exact needs. These unique hormones are not the same asthe mass-produced medications you would see at your local pharmacy or the older synthetic hormones which were derived from pregnant horses’ urine. Yes, but there are, as with any medical treatment, potential side effects. These can include increased blood viscosity, breast enlargement, or testicular shrinkage. Side effects are greatly reduced if you work with a properly trained physician who will conduct the proper lab work and closely monitor your treatment and progress. It should also be noted that the use of medications for muscle building and performance-enhancing purposes can lead to dangerous and unregulated levels of testosterone, which may have serious side effects.

Unfortunately, testosterone replacement has been abused by people who are not truly deficient and not treated by a medical professional. Athletes and bodybuilders who attain the medication for aesthetic purposes have given it a negative reputation however this is not the case in a true medical replacement therapy program. If diagnosed, administered and properly monitored, low testosterone individuals may see a marked change in overall health. A significant majority of scientific data shows that testosterone replacement therapy is safe when administered correctly by a professional.
